Dr. HUGO CAYUELA

I am a population biologist interested in the demographic mechanisms shaping variation in senescence and life history strategies, as well as the dynamics of wild populations. An important part of my work focuses on the study of aging and the ecological and evolutionary processes that determine the astonishing diversity of age-specific trajectories of mortality and reproduction observed in the animal kingdom. I address these questions using comparative demography approaches at the intra- and interspecific levels, mainly in ectothermic tetrapods.

I also study the evolutionary forces shaping the neutral and adaptive genetic structure of populations. I have a particular interest in the molecular mechanisms involved in adaptation to environmental factors with critical effects on phenotypic and demographic traits. I also examine the role potentially played by different types of genetic variants (SNPs, CNVs and chromosomal rearrangements) in changes in life history strategies in natural populations.
